The Sixers and Cavaliers meet Thursday, October 22 (7:00 PM ET) at Xfinity Mobile Arena in a game that doubles as an early test of two very different roster builds. Philadelphia has reshaped itself with the arrivals of Jaylen Brown (via trade from Boston) and LeBron James (via free agency), giving the Sixers a starting five of James, Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Cleveland answers with James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Peyton Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen under head coach Kenny Atkinson, a group that reached the Eastern Conference finals last spring before being swept by the Knicks.
76ers vs Cavs Betting Picks: Oct 22 Analysis
The market loves Philadelphia: DraftKings has the Sixers around -175 on the moneyline. That price reflects the star power, but it also assumes a brand-new starting five finds its rhythm right away. The group made its preseason debut on October 8 in a 114-108 loss to the Nets, and the early questions were about fit: how Brown’s role works alongside James and Maxey as primary ball handlers, and how much Embiid, 33, can handle across an 82-game season. Early in the year, while rotations are still being built, that kind of uncertainty is exactly what the points are for.
Cleveland, meanwhile, has the more settled identity. Harden runs the offense, Mitchell is the primary scorer, and Mobley and Allen anchor the defense. This isn’t a team that needs a month to figure out who it is. With the Sixers likely to manage minutes for their veterans (James turns 42 in December), a Cavaliers side getting points on the road is the more appealing angle than laying a heavy price on the moneyline.
The Plays:
- Cavaliers to cover the spread (1.5 units): take the points and shop for the best number
- Live-bet opportunity: if Philadelphia jumps out early, the Cavs’ live moneyline becomes interesting at plus money
Best Player Props for Sixers-Cavaliers Matchup
James Harden’s assist prop is the cleanest angle on the Cleveland side. Harden is the primary playmaker for an offense built around Mitchell, Mobley and Allen finishing plays, and assists tend to follow him no matter what the scoreboard says. Check your book’s number, but the Over is where I’d start.
Evan Mobley’s rebounding prop is the other one I like. Mobley and Allen are the heart of Cleveland’s rim protection, and a game against an Embiid-led offense creates long rebounds for the Cavs’ bigs. Again, shop the number before you bet.
On the Sixers side, I’d be patient. Maxey’s usage is the biggest unknown now that James and Brown share the ball with him, so let the lines settle after a few games before betting his scoring props.
The Props:
- James Harden Over assists (1.5 units): the engine of Cleveland’s offense
- Evan Mobley Over rebounds (1 unit): rebounding and rim protection anchor
- Pass: Tyrese Maxey props until his role in the new lineup is clearer
This Sixers-Cavs matchup is a good reminder that the star names on the marquee don’t always match the price: everyone sees LeBron, Embiid and Brown and assumes a blowout, but the underlying questions about fit, health and minutes are real. I’m treating the points on the Cavaliers as the value side and keeping my prop exposure focused on Cleveland’s playmaker and bigs.
What’s your read on the new-look Sixers: are you buying them right away, or fading Philadelphia until the lineup proves it fits?
